1. Close kelimesi fiildir ve “kapatmak” anlamına gelir:
Could you close the door? (Kapıyı kapatabilir misiniz?)
2. Shut kelimesi de fiil olup “kapatmak” anlamına gelir:
I shut the door quietly. (Kapıyı sessizce kapattım.)
Please shut the gate. (Lütfen bahçe kapısını kapat.)
3. Shut kelimesi aynı zamanda “kapalı” anlamında sıfattır. Close kelimesinin sıfat hâli closed’dur:
The windows were all shut. (Pencerelerin hepsi kapalıydı.)
The shutters are closed. (Panjurlar kapalı.)
Sıfat olan bu iki kelimeden sadece closed isimlerden önce kullanılır:
A closed door (Kapalı bir kapı) = a shut door denmez.
4. Bir işyeri, mağaza ya da kamu binası için “kapanmak” anlamında hem close hem de shut fiil olarak kullanılır:
Many libraries close on Saturdays at 3 p.m. (Birçok kütüphane, cumartesileri saat 3’te kapanır.)
What time do the shops shut? (Mağazalar saat kaçta kapanıyor?)
5. Yol, sınır ya da havalimanı gibi yerler için “kapalı” anlamında closed kullanılır, shut kullanılmaz:
The border with Hong Kong was closed. (Hong Kong sınırı kapalıydı.)
This road is closed to traffic. (Bu yol trafiğe kapalı.)
6. Konu, dava, banka hesabı gibi şeyleri “kapatmak” anlamında close kullanılır, shut kullanılmaz:
He spoke as if he wanted to close the conversation. (Konuyu kapatmak ister gibi konuştu.)
The case is closed. (Dava kapandı.)
“The matter is closed.” said the health minister. (Sağlık bakanı “konu kapandı” dedi.)
I closed that bank account when I came to Madrid. (Madrid’e gelince o banka hesabını kapattım.)
